The Power of “Journaling”

Numerous studies have shown that journaling can be an invaluable tool for our mental well-being. I’ve been journaling ever since I read the “Artist’s Way” by Julia Cameron, where she talks about a “brain dump”. But I’ve been going through phases where I struggle to just start writing. So, I’ve developed prompts. These prompts are designed to help me focus on the positive things in my life, help me keep an eye on what I’m doing well for my health, and help me find that purpose and meaning in life in the big and small things every single day.

I have noticed that I’m far more resilient when it comes to stressful situations and that I seem to be able to worry less. I find it easier to get “out of my head” and I feel overall more positive. Positive feelings reduce our cortisol (stress) hormones. Cortisol has been linked to weakened immune system which can result in colds & flus, but also in more serious health issues where the immune systems are overburdened. Cortisol can also be the reason why weight-loss isn’t happening even with extreme restrictive diets. It disturbs sleep which leads to lack of energy and motivation. And constantly high cortisol makes you age quicker!

So, here are the prompts. Write your comments on these every night before going to bed. So, ideally keep your journal next to your bed. You can expand as much or as little as you like and really use it as a “Brain dump”.

1. How did the day go? If you set any goals did you achieve them? This could be simply doing what you had planned to do.

2. What are you grateful for? Try changing it, ie don’t write every day you’re grateful for your house, your job, your husband or kids. Also, try to find something small such as watching a robin or a beautiful sunrise.

3. What did I do for my health today? Exercise, relaxation, sleep, food, water. What didn’t go so well and why? Write without judgment!

4. Did I make someone happy or smile? Did I learn something? Did I do something challenging? Did I do something impactful? (These are all prompts to help find purpose and meaning in life in the small things such as a smile).

5. What is my goal for tomorrow? What do I want to get done?
